Business Spotlight: FirstLight Home Care

Going above and beyond to provide quality care for its clients and sharing a lasting commitment to treating clients and staff as family is at the heart of the ongoing success of FirstLight Home Care of Windham.

The company’s dedication to health and wellness is exemplary and its team of compassionate caregivers has made a difference in the lives of countless community residents. Located at 944 Roosevelt Trail in Windham, FirstLight Home Care is family owned and operated and devoted to giving everyone the peace of mind to enjoy the quality of life they deserve.

Recently honored with the national distinction as a Best of Home Care Provider of Choice for exhibiting highest levels of professionalism, quality and expertise in home care, FirstLight owners Peter Gartland and Carol Larkin give credit for the award to the company’s focus on exceptional customer service delivered by an extraordinary team of skilled caregivers.

FirstLight Home Care offers senior care, personal care, companion care, dementia care, respite care and specialty care that’s affordable, reliable, and trustworthy. It offers care for those recovering from surgery, or anyone who just needs a little assistance.

Care services range from friendly conversation to helping with basic household tasks and individual needs like bathing and personal hygiene. From a few hours a day to 24-hour care, FirstLight caregivers exceed expectations to help with daily tasks and activities that may become difficult for individuals to manage as they age.

The goal for FirstLight caregivers is to keep clients in their own homes and provide them with the support they need to maintain their independence.

In business for the past 11 ½ years, FirstLight Home Care offers a highly experienced, and long tenured team of caregivers that are thoroughly screened and vetted before working with clients. Caregivers are compassionate and empathetic, undergo a rigorous background check and are drug-tested.

The Gartland Family believes in taking care of its caregiving staff and always treat them like members of their own family, who in turn then pass that on to the clients.

Jessie Gartland of FirstLight Home Care said that sometimes clients are hesitant to obtain home care service and are under the misconception that caregivers are going to come in and take over.

“We work with our clients, so they are comfortable with the caregivers. Needs change over time and we certainly adapt to them,” she said. “It’s more economical to stay in your own home and many of our clients look forward to the visits from their caregivers who are there to help them.”

She said sometimes it may be necessary for a client to go into a nursing home, but otherwise FirstLight Home Care is available as an option.

The quality of services rendered to clients is exceptional and ranges from one single shift to complete 24/7 care.

For families, communication about the care that their loved ones receive is paramount, so all client care notes, caregiver schedules and even the option to pay a bill is available online.

FirstLight Home Care reviews on social media are outstanding.

“All sorts of reasons to recommend them. They are professional, helpful, and understand caregiving from their own experience. The people that work for them are wonderful with my aunt, and help me when I ask questions about dementia, aging, or their own experiences with elderly. When I needed more hours, or an extra day because I had an appointment, there was no problem.” Ann D.

“This company has been working with my mom and her friend for 6 months. They have been amazing people to work with. Mom is 96 and her friend 100. Their health and home needs have changed several times in the 6 months we’ve had their support. I have never dealt with nicer group of accommodating people. Whenever we need time adjustments it’s done or add on another task it’s done. I have never heard “we can’t do that”; it’s always “yes we can do that.” The agency has been a Godsend helping to care for the aging parents we love so much. Thank you First Light!!” Cheryl C.

Business Spotlight: Gray Urgent Care

The healthcare professionals behind the new Gray Urgent Care clinic think that the time for bringing quality patient-centered non-emergency care to where it is needed is long overdue.

Starting Monday, Dec. 12, Gray Urgent Care at 6 Turnpike Acres Road in Gray opens its doors to assist the community with convenient hours and a nearby facility. Located next to the Gray Post Office just off Gray Road, Gray Urgent Care owners Patricia and Anna Kittredge say that they are excited to provide reliable and affordable walk-in service without having to wait weeks for an appointment in the area.

“The care that I want to provide is not a big box urgent care model. I never want my patients to feel like a number,” Patricia Kittredge said. “I want to give them personal, patient-centered, compassionate care.”

The facility is a dream come true for the Kittredges, who are longtime residents of Gray. Patricia Kittredge is a family nurse practitioner who will serve as Gray Urgent Care’s medical director and treating provider, while Anna Kittredge, a veteran and a physician assistant with extensive military medical experience, is the practice’s chief operating officer.

Gray Urgent Care will offer walk-in service to patients from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with no appointments necessary.

Services offered at Gray Urgent Care include on-site x-rays and point-of-care testing, as well as treatment for a variety of acute, non-emergency conditions ranging from fractures and sprains to viral infections to COVID-19, among many others. The clinic also offers physicals for youth sports.

“We’re here to help people,” Anna Kittredge said. “Patients can relax and trust that we can treat them to the best of our ability. We live here and it’s important for us to let the community know that we’re here for them.”

It’s not a standalone emergency medical facility for life-threatening treatment but rather Gray Urgent Care is a convenient location to receive medical care for acute illnesses and acute injuries.

It handles fractures, sprains, strains and dislocations; joint injections and aspirations; laceration repairs; rashes; incision and drainage of abscesses; allergic reactions; foreign bodies; viral infections; vomiting/diarrhea; COVID-19; pneumonia, bronchitis, influenza, strep throat, and mono infections; Lyme’s disease and other tick-borne illnesses; ear, sinus and eye infections; sports physicals; initial workers compensation injuries; urinary tract infections; and STD screening and treatment.

“We live here, have children here and now we have this opportunity to work here. Together, we bring over 33 years of emergency and urgent care experience, and Patricia spent the past seven years leading the urgent care facility at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston,” said Anna Kittredge. “In addition, we are proud to say that Gray Urgent Care is veteran-owned and operated. We’re excited to put the days of long commuting behind us and stay close to home to serve the urgent care needs of you, your family and friends.”

visiting the clinic is something that appealed to Patricia Kittredge in opening the new Gray Urgent Care.

“We want to show our integrity, we’re not a big box urgent care,” Patricia Kittredge said. “We provide patient-centered and whole-person care which involves looking at the whole person, not just separate organs or body systems, and considering multiple factors that promote either health or disease.”

Patient visits are expected to run less than an hour on average from check-in to check-out and it will save having to drive to Portland or Lewiston for medical care.

“I was born and raised in Maine and we both live in Gray,” Patricia Kittredge said. “We care about our neighbors and friends here. We’re ready to bring quality healthcare to where it is needed right here in this community.”

Business Spotlight: Tia's Treats and Eats

During the Christmas season and for special occasions throughout the entire year, no celebration would be complete without holiday treats from Tia’s Treats and Eats.

Tia Morrell is the owner of Tia's Treats and
Eats, a business specializing in the finest
chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate
candy, grazing boards and coca bombs in
the Greater Portland area.
COURTESY PHOTO
Featuring some of the most delicious candy and indulgent delicacies that she makes herself in her own kitchen right here in Maine, Tia’s Treats and Eats is an experience not to be missed for any holiday or celebration.

Tia Morrell is a native of Windham who founded Tia’s Treats and Eats several years ago and is committed to offering the finest chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate candy, cocoa bombs, grazing boards and exceptional customer service available in the Greater Portland area. Each treat is prepared using fresh and organic ingredients, sourced locally and from around the globe and gift cards are also available.

“The best thing about what we do is to make something that seems so simple, but it is so well loved by those who receive it,” Morrell said. “The biggest challenge is finding the time to do even more of this.”

Tia’s Treats and Eats can be selected and ordered online and can either be picked up or delivered locally for free in the Greater Portland area.

“We offer something that can be brought to baby showers, the office Christmas party, for weddings, for Valentine’s Day, school graduations and more,” Morrell said. “The best part is that it’s all hand-made.”

Choices can be made directly online and the menu for Tia’s Treats and Eats rotates depending upon the season.

“Valentine’s Day is typically our busiest season,” Morrell said. “But no matter what time of year, the ordering process is very accessible and it’s very easy to get our products.”

Along with a wide assortment of sugary delights, Tia’s Treats and Eats also offers gluten-free and allergy-free treats that can be enjoyed by all.

“Because it’s important to me, our packaging comes in recyclable boxes and our grazing board bamboo trays are compostable,” she said. “Everything is safe for the environment. These are snacks that are good for our planet.”

She founded the company after living and working in New York City and then upon returning to her home state of Maine, Morrell says that she discovered that she couldn’t find some of the treats here that she enjoyed there.

Morrell says that she’s constantly looking to add new products to her line and at any given time, has between 10 and 12 different items available for purchase depending on the time of year.

“Finding just the right ingredients is always tough and does depend upon the day,” she said. “I find that I’m always shopping. It’s difficult to get strawberries throughout the year. Sometimes I’m ordering up to 30 cases of strawberries at a time.”

She says that she has discovered that to be successful in this type of business, a person must have the right mindset.

“You must have a quality product, be positive and friendly, and it takes time to build referrals,” Morrell said.

So far, the reviews for her products are sensational.

“I had berries gifted to me and they were so beautiful. But not only were they aesthetically pleasing, they were delicious. The berries were perfectly ripe, and the paired chocolate just couldn't have been better. Contactless delivery was a huge bonus as well.” Helen C. on Yelp

“Tia puts her all into creating such a special and delicious way of saying thank you. Recently I asked her to create a special gift of appreciation to a fine EMS department. They were worthy of something that took some love in creating, packaging, and delivering and Tia did exactly that. I added to the order last minute she accommodated without hesitation. I can tell you - these gorgeous delicacies got rave reviews! Thank you again, Tia. I would encourage you to reach out to her for any day, moment or event that has meaning for you.” Cheryl C. on Yelp

“Love, love, love my Valentine strawberries!!!! I wish I had taken a picture, but we hit that box hard! They tasted even better than they looked. And fruity pebbles with white chocolate might be my favorite now. Thanks Tia you’re doing amazing work.” Mary McGurn Wasick on Facebook

Business Spotlight: Cricket's Corner Shoppe

No matter how old you are or what your budget is, Cricket’s Corner Shoppe is bound to have a gift to please the pickiest recipient on your shopping list.

Cricket's Corner Shoppe at 1223 Roosevelt Trail in
Raymond is a go-to destination for shoppers in search of
the perfect gift. It offers unique products not found
anywhere else and for all budgets.  COURTESY PHOTO
Located at 1223 Roosevelt Trail in Raymond, Cricket’s Corner Shoppe has become a legendary go-to destination for locals and for anyone visiting the Lakes Region of Maine by offering thousands of items and with fresh inventory arriving every week.

Don (Uncle Don) Drew has owned and operated Cricket’s Corner Shoppe since 1999 and says the business derived its name from the nickname of the daughter of the previous owner. Before Uncle Don, it was mostly a consignment-type shop, but he has since turned it into a customer favorite by featuring many unique items not commonly found elsewhere.

Cricket’s Corner Shoppe has greeting cards; puzzles; jams and jellies; doll houses, doll furniture and doll clothing; toys; scarves; women’s beauty products; Donna Sharp handbags; a Christmas tree room, honey, Christmas ornaments; Christmas-related items year-round; one of the largest candle selections in the Lakes Region; maple products; stuffed animals; candies, hand-blown glass gifts, Willow Tree Angels, bath supplies; Maine souvenirs; and an array of novelty items that dazzle the imagination.

“We believe this is the most unique one-stop shopping experience you can find,” Uncle Don said. “If you’re looking for a gift, this is the place to come. We’re a unique giftshop with a vast array of products and have something for everyone’s taste and everyone’s pocketbook.”

Situated in a 5,600-square-foot building, Uncle Don said shoppers are often surprised at how large Cricket’s Corner Shoppe is inside.

“Some people have no realization how big it is until they start walking through it and walk down the aisles,” Uncle Don said. “They tell me that they’re amazed at the amount of inventory we have to offer.”

Uncle Don has been working in retail for 50 years and says the slogans created for Cricket’s Corner Shoppe truly do apply.

“We have two sayings. The first is ‘Everything under one roof’ and the other one is ‘If we don’t have it, you don’t need it’ and those pretty much sum up this business,” he said.

Originally from Portland, Uncle Don says that he first became interested in retail stores as the result of a friend who owned a business in Wells.

“She had a big barn in Wells and wanted me to do something with it,” he said. “That was really how I got started in doing something like this.”

Uncle Don is the sole proprietor of Cricket’s Corner Shoppe and has two employees helping operate the business. He does all the ordering of the thousands of items of unique merchandise and manages to do so without computers or a website.

“We do have people who visit here in the summer, and they go back home after seeing something in the store, and then call us and ask us to ship it to them,” he said. “We’re happy to wrap them up and ship it to them.”

Many customers are from throughout Southern Maine, but Uncle Don said he does have loyal shoppers visit from Otisfield, Poland, Kennebunkport and points beyond.

“They keep coming back we always have sales going on and offer great deals and competitive prices,” he said.

The busiest time of the year at Cricket’s Corner Shoppe is typically during the months of November and December as shoppers try to choose the prefect holiday gift, but Uncle Don said that with new items arriving every week, it’s always a great time to stop in and see new displays of merchandise.

“My keys to running a successful business are simple,” he said. “Always greet the customer. Always be pleasant to the customers. Stand behind the merchandise you sell. If you can do that and have great products, the customers will come back again and again.”

Cricket’s Corner Shoppe is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. In January it is not open on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.

“We also are located on Watchic Lake, so boats have access to pull right up, tie off and come in,” she said. “We have a game room and huge back lawn for fires, live music and cornhole tournaments.”

According to Cates, the emphasis for the Outpost Bar and Grill is making sure that all guests have a great experience.

“We have a game room with arcade games, a pool table, cornhole and putt putt golf,” she said. “We just started offering mug club to customers where they can purchase a mug and get discounts on draft beer and cocktails, a free app on their birthday, and mug club member only specials throughout the week.”

“Customers love that we have a wide variety of gluten-free options and dairy-free options,” Cates said. “We know that finding a place that offers those options is hard, so customers seem to love being able to have fried food and know that it is 100 percent gluten-free. Customers seem to love the quality of our food. We offer a homemade feel with every meal. We take pride in prepping and preparing meals for our patrons.”

Business Spotlight: The Whitening Lab Co.

Exceptional care, affordability and giving confident smiles to patients is what The Whitening Lab. Co. in Gray provides and along with offering jewelry, pottery, beauty and aesthetic services, the business is rapidly developing a reputation as the place of choice in New England for professional teeth whitening.

Located at 19 Main St., Suite 1 in Gray, The Whitening Lab Co. was opened in June by Tabatha Post and Courtney Carll, both of whom are highly experienced in the dental field.

“After 30 years in the dental field, we felt that the patient experience was significantly declining and something had to change,” Post said. “From the minute you walk into The Whitening Lab to the second you leave we want our clients to be our main priority and not a production quota.”

According Carll, a visit to The Whitening Lab is highly affordable with significant savings realized over conventional dental practices, and convenient appointments.

The Whitening Lab Co. offer professional teeth whitening, dental jewelry (popularly known as tooth gems) and its newest launch, a “Confidence at Home Whitening Kit,” where clients can now take their whitening beyond the studio.

“We take pride in our experience from start to finish, making our clients truly feel comfortable, educating them on how to maintain and care for their teeth, and leaving with confidence in their smile,” Carll said. “We have expanded in offering services from Aestheticians Tanasia Street and Tanya Herald, the owners of Eden Spa Aesthetics. We additionally offer a retail side of The Whitening Lab which features only local artisans, from handmade jewelry from the co-owner Tabatha to paintings from Nancy Polito, homewares from Fern and Fiddle, pottery from For the Love of Clay, handmade cards from Bolster Mills, and bath and body products from Lakehouse Lavender.”

To provide the best in aesthetic services, The Whitening Lab Co. has partnered with Eden Spa Aesthetics, which also has an office in Standish.

“We are a medical spa that specializes in Botulinum toxin injections multi-area, dermal fillers multi-area, micro-needling procedures with Skin Pen and Platelet Rich Plasma, PRP injections for restorative care, neck rejuvenation, and Eden was the first spa in the state to offer Geneo Oxygen facials which offer a high level of flexibility with patients’ skin care needs,” Street said.

Herald and Street visit The Whitening Lab Co. every Thursday and are both aestheticians and Registered Nurses which is necessary for injections. They have more than 30 years combined nursing experience and three-plus years of experience in aesthetics.

“We hold two things in the ultimate regard,” Street said. “First is our integrity. We pride ourselves on informing you of your decisions and making you feel at ease. We want you comfortable in mind and body during your treatments and we believe that that begins with you fully understanding your procedure. We do our utmost to keep you physically comfortable, but we believe that relaxation begins with information.”

She said that secondly, they understand that people can be very self-critical when it comes to impressions of self.

“We want you to see in yourself what we see. We know that people that come to sit in our chairs are perceiving something of themselves that is ‘bothersome’ to them,” Street said. “Sometimes that is all that it is … a perception. We tend to talk our patients out of more things than we talk them into in regard to aesthetics. We want you to leave seeing the person that others see and releasing some of that self-criticism with the least amount of investment possible.”

Staying up on current trends is what truly sets The Whitening Lab Co. and Eden Spa Aesthetics apart from competitors.

Post said everyone who walks through the door of The Whitening Lab Co. can expect five things.

"We want to provide authenticity, honesty, transparency, exceptional client service and a fun experience for everyone,” she said.

Dennis and Jamie Harmon established the company in 2022 and have been working hard at becoming the preferred choice in the area when a thorough yet affordable cleaning is needed. The married couple have been working together for six years and decided to form Harmon’s Cleaning Service to offer exceptional customer care and attention to detail at a fair price for the community.

Harmon’s is not your typical cleaning company. With just two employees, clients can be assured they will know who will be in their home each clean. They are responsive and answer every phone call. And they show up on time, use quality products and have their own equipment, and perform outstanding work that exceeds all expectations.

“We are a locally owned, veteran-owned and operated, husband/wife cleaning team, with white-glove clean expectations,” said Jamie Harmon. “We do not have other employees and our clients will know each clean exactly who will be in their intimate private space of their homes. We show up each time and make sure to complete the job to satisfaction. Often, we ask a homeowner, when possible, to take a walk through before we leave to make sure we met all their expectations of the clean.”

Services are available for residential and commercial clients, including rental turnovers, camp opening and closing cleans, one-time deep cleans, move-in and move-out cleans. Harmon’s Cleaning Service also performs window cleaning and lawn clean-ups in the spring and fall.

Prices are competitive and highly affordable but the attention to detail they exhibit on every job and the quality of the cleaning they perform surpasses expectations.

They treat every home they work on as if it were their own, taking exceptional care of client’s furnishings and genuinely caring about those they serve. Quality work and exceptional customer care are the calling card of Harmons’ Cleaning Service. They are courteous, friendly, neighborly and believe that to earn a client’s repeat business that their work must always be outstanding.

Clients who have used Harmon’s Cleaning Service say that their work is amazing.

Here are some reviews that have been posted online about them:

“Responsive, prompt, easy to schedule, did a great job, great price and nice people!!” Vanessa D.

According to Jamie Harmon, the best aspect of working for Harmon’s Cleaning Service is always seeing the finished product when the job is done.

Business Spotlight: Sky High Tree Service

Trees certainly add charm to the landscaping of homes, but poorly maintained trees or trees damaged by storms create safety hazards for families and inflict costly property damage to a home. But that’s where Sky High Tree Service can lend a hand.

Based in Buxton and serving the entire Lakes Region, Sky High Tree Service has been in business for four years and is owned by Marcus Lefebvre, who has the expertise and equipment necessary to remove tree problems before heavy winds or a sudden snowstorm can result in disaster.

Sky High performs hazardous tree removals, crane work, chipping, stump removal and pruning work, along with tree trimmings and takedowns close to buildings and structures, in and around leach fields, close to power and utility lines and hanging over roadways. It also works on roofing, spring and fall cleanup jobs, and paving and sealcoating projects.

But the company specializes in tree work, no matter how large or small a project may be.

“I truly enjoy hazardous removals and seeing how the properties look before and then after,” Lefebvresaid. “The work is remarkably transformational for properties.”

Licensed and fully insured with contract climbers available, Sky High’s owner accepts how challenging

it can be to maintain properties in today’s economy, so Lefebvre strives to make services more affordable than the competition.

“Everyone thinks tree work should cost nothing,” Lefebvre said. “This is a physically demanding job that requires attention to detail. Experience matters significantly when it comes to crane work and when trees are near structures. We do recognize that affordability is important, and we always do our best to offer the lowest prices possible.”

Lefebvre also believes that being up front with homeowners regarding services is paramount to establishing a great relationship with potential customers.

“Communication is key to what we do at Sky High Tree Service,” he said. “I’m a firm believer in doing what you say you will for the price that you quote. The price you are quoted will always be the price you pay.”

Every property they work at is different and most jobs are priced according to the proximity to nearby structures, size, weight and other factors, Lefebvre said. “We specialize in top quality work all the way from roofing to tree pruning and removal. Spring and fall are the busiest months, but we do work year-round.”

Because of the company’s thorough knowledge of trees, precision extraction experience and exceptional customer service, Sky High Tree Service has a loyal following of satisfied customers.

“Marcus did a fantastic job, and we would highly recommend him and his crew!! We had four major trees removed and 20 others of medium size. Marcus gave us a price, a timeline on when he could do the job and the best part, he showed up and on time! Great job, great work ethic and very reliable!! We will use it his services again. Thank you Marcus!!” Colleen O’Connor Griffin

“HIGHLY recommend these gentlemen for any tree needs!! We had a huge tree in our front yard that was close to powerlines, the road, our house, and our well but they did a FANTASTIC job getting it down safely for us and we are SO grateful!! They are fully insured, but even beyond that, the gentleman in charge (Marcus) was amazing! Super professional, understanding, clearly cares about his customers, reasonably priced, and definitely knows his stuff! I've never experienced a tree professional (or much of any professional really) SO wonderful and gracious!! SUPER impressed and SO beyond grateful for their help! Will definitely call them again if we need work done!” Helen Wood

“Did an amazing job grinding down our tree stumps. Went above and beyond. Were quick and reasonably priced. I will use them again.” Megan Boldter

“Very professional. Easy to work with. Fast efficient work and cleaned up the yard 100 percent after. Highly recommended.” Don Jamison

Business Spotlight: Mist Natural Spa

“I want people to step into a space that they feel connected with nature, that is inclusive, that their

skin needs and wants are being heard,” Munster said. “I want clients to leave feeling refreshed, relaxed and renewed. I believe and practice with natural skincare and wanted to offer mindfulskincare to the Lakes Region area.”

A new facility is opening soon in Raymond that promises a relaxing experience and a space that will invite your senses to reconnect with nature and unplug for a little while.

Located at 1288 Roosevelt Trail, Unit 4 in Raymond, Mist Natural Spa opens Nov. 1 and specializes in facials, nourishing body scrubs and wraps, and a sip, soak, and mask bar, along with a breathtaking site to relax and unwind with friends, family, or by yourself. Mist Natural Spa is owned by Megan Munster, who has created a spa that focuses on the whole well-being process in beautiful surroundings inspired by nature and lush flora.

“This is a new and exciting journey for me. I come from a 15-year career with NetJets private aviation,” Munster said. “When COVID entered our lives, flying globally was no longer an option for our family. I was lucky to have the financial support and emotional backing of NetJets to move onto a new chapter. Traveling to a multitude of countries allowed me a unique opportunity to talk to a wide variety of skin care professionals and experiment with products I was unable to find stateside. I was able to take part in skin care rituals and beliefs unique to the counties I visited. This showed me the importance of natural skin care, but also the mind, body connection and the importance of family, nature, and all things water.”

Intended to serve clients throughout the Lakes Region and Greater Portland area, Mist Natural Spa aims to deliver exceptional customer service, attention to detail, effective communication and a reliable and trustworthy experience while listening to and responding to client concerns.

“I think the most significant aspect of my business is my journey here, my personal skin challenges and my love of natural, clean products. Having struggled with rosacea, reactive, and keloid forming skin my whole life, I haven’t been able to receive a lot of services available today,” Munster said. “I needed to explore through school, the trial and error of what services and products work best for my skin and others, and what reactions were caused.”

She says what will distinguish Mist Natural Spa from competitors is the overall vibe that she wants her clients to feel.

Aimong the other services available at Mist Natural Spa are microcurrent facials, often called the non-invasive face lift, that delivers true microcurrent.

“The 7E Myolift 600 sets the standard for non-invasive technology and the ability to provide a lasting, natural lift and toning results for all clients,” Munster said. “Celluma-led light therapy facial is a wonderful device that addresses both aging skin and acne. The high intensity light emitting diodes (LED) improve skin health, tone and texture. Detox and Sculpt is a great way to get your lymphatic system moving. Helping to reduce puffiness, push waste and toxins from our lymph nodes, the youth facial is an excellent and informative introduction to skin wellness.”

According to Munster, Mist Natural Spa’s sip, soak and mask area is a real treat.

“You come in solo, with friends or family. It’s a space to unwind, laugh and share stories,” she said. “The music is a little more upbeat than the treatment room. You can choose an invigorating cup of tea or a relaxing herbal cup, next is your choice between a dry sauna or a river rock soak for your feet, followed by a mask choice for your eyes, lips, décolletage or hands.”

The microcurrent and Celluma devices are FDA cleared and Mist Natural Spa strives to provide products that are free from harsh chemicals, parabens, perfumes.

“I am not always a fan of trends. I like to stick with devices and services that I see results with,” Munster said. “However, I am always searching to further my education and training. I am very excited for additional training I will undergo in January which will allow me to offer additional services. I will always continue to peruse future education and training.”

Pricing for services offered at Mist Natural Spa are competitive but attainable.

“I have made sure to include options for a wide variety of finances. You can come in for a full-service facial, body wrap, express light therapy, or enjoy time hanging with your friends or family,” Munster said. “My goal is to provide something for everyone’s time and budget. I look forward with a passion, excitement, and never-ending curiosity for how our skin behaves.”

Business Spotlight: Blush & Brow Permanent Cosmetics

With abundant expertise and experience in permanent makeup, Blush & Brow Permanent Cosmetics of

Windham is striving to make customers feel confident and beautiful every day.

Owned and operated by Samantha Clark, Blush & Brow Permanent Cosmetics is located at 936 Roosevelt Trail Suite 4 in Windham and offers a range of permanent makeup services such as microblading, powder brows, eyeliner, and lip blushing, and soon to be offering tiny body tattoos. Clark also is adept at wedding makeup and makeup services for other events.

Clark, now in her 10th year as a certified makeup artist and her second year as a permanent makeup artist, says that the top aspect of what she does is watching her customer’s reactions once she’s done transforming their appearance.

“I love the way I make people feel when they leave,” Clark said. “They are always so happy and excited, and everyone is looking for that in their work.”

She is a micropigmentation specialist based in Windham who specializes in attention to detail and providing clients with exceptional customer service every time they visit Blush & Brow Permanent Cosmetics.

Micropigmentation is the art of the application of permanent makeup and permanent cosmetics and is a cosmetic procedure used to improve or replace lost coloring on the skin. It is most often associated with facial applications including to enhance eyebrows, eyelashes, eyelids as eyeliner and for the lips. It’s also used to camouflage or improve scars, even out skin coloring and to restore color to areas of skin that have lost color for one reason or another.

It’s highly skilled work and an art form all to itself, but its transformative results are nothing short of amazing, Clark said.

“Brows have to be shaped out first and a stencil is then made that has to be perfect,” she said. “It’s time consuming and tedious and in the end, it’s worth every minute.”

According to Clark, the permanent makeup industry is constantly changing as new advances in technology and cosmetics are achieved.

“Through constant trainings and practicing non-stop, I work hard to give my best work to all my clients,” she said. “I am always learning and keeping up with what products are new and making sure to use only high-quality products for my clients as it really does matter in this line of work.”

Because permanent makeup is highly visible, Clark said the transformative nature of the cosmetic procedure makes an immediate impression.

“This is something that is on their face, and they are not only a walking advertisement for Blush & Brow, but they come trusting in me to give them permanent makeup that looks good,” she said. “The favorite part of my job is when clients react after I’m finished my work. I love seeing those big smiles and loving how happy it makes them that they won’t have to wake up and apply makeup anymore.”

Anyone who performs microblading or works with permanent makeup must obtain a micropigmentation license through the health inspection department from the state of Maine and Clark says it’s important to always check if a permanent makeup artist is licensed. They also must complete a blood-borne pathogens certification course every year.

Blush & Brow works with all types of clients and Clark suggests that if you’re unsure about permanent makeup you can schedule a free consultation to discuss all questions you have to see if you’re a good candidate for it.

Clients say Blush & Brow is simply one of the best, and Clark’s reviews are outstanding.

“For the first time in over a decade, I have eyebrows again. I don't have to worry about getting them wet and rubbing off or stressing about a daily makeup routine. She was able put a confidence back in me that I had been missing for a long time. She is so talented at what she does and her passion for it shows. I highly recommend that anyone who is even considering having their eyebrows done, go see Samantha Clark. She is a truly gifted artist. – Deanna Tarbox

“The best makeup I have ever seen. if anyone can make me look good, trust me they are the best. Highly, highly recommend. She is professional and she really should be doing makeup for the stars. You need to be in Hollywood but glad you are not. Thank you thank you thank you. – Kim Newton

Business Spotlight: Conroy’s Home Heating Fuels

Anyone who’s had to search for a reputable heating and propane provider in Windham values a
company that is responsive and communicates effectively with its customers while offering timely deliveries and fair prices.

Conroy’s Home Heating Fuels has been in business since 1942 but is now taking on customers in Windham and that’s welcome news for this area.

Conroy’s is family owned and operated and small enough to provide exceptional customer service and superior attention to detail while large enough to handle everyone’s heating needs. With its fleet of trucks based in Saco, Conroy’s has the capacity to handle extreme winter volumes for heating needs yet goes the extra mile to get to know its customers and values the opportunity to serve them better.

Offering heating oil, propane, and K-1 kerosene at competitive prices, Conroy’s Home Heating Fuels has various pricing platforms to keep everyone warm when it’s cold outside. Conroy’s also has private burner technicians available to handle any customer needs that may arise.

“We take pride in customer service. We know a lot of people are currently frustrated with the larger out-of-state companies,” said Brent Heanssler of Conroy’s Home Heating Fuels “Our motto is ‘large enough to serve, small enough to care.’ We make the extra effort to understand and cater to our customer’s specific fuel needs, but we also have the resources to get the job done.”

He said Conroy’s offers its customers an array of different ways to pay, including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash, and convenient pricing plans, such as a budget plan to spread out your fuel payments over many months. Or they have a pre-buy plan designed to lock in a set price over a specified time to avoid market pricing volatility. There are also discounts available for seniors, military, and first-responders or for large-volume purchases.

Heanssler said another benefit that customers can come to expect from Conroy’s Home Heating Fuels is that there are never any hidden charges for services rendered.

“A lot of companies are now charging hidden delivery fees, hidden hazmat fees or hidden fuel recovery fees,” he said. “We do not charge any of these.”

As the cost of heating fuels has risen in the past few years, Conroy’s Home Heating Fuels is keenly aware of how this affects household budgets and strives to ensure the best price it can for its customers.

“We try to keep our pricing in line with our competitors, but we also allow 15 days for payment, which many others do not,” Heanssler said. “In addition, we offer lock-in and pre-buy options with various payment choices, and budget accounts. We are also an approved LIHEAP vendor with the state.”

With a staff of eight, Conroy’s services much of Southern Maine including Arundel; Lyman; Biddeford; Old Orchard Beach; Buxton; Portland; Cape Elizabeth; Saco; Dayton; Scarborough; Gorham; South Portland; Hollis; Waterboro; Kennebunk; Westbrook, and this year for the first time, it’s offering service to customers in Windham.

Unlike larger and more impersonal heating companies that schedule deliveries weeks out and you never speak directly to a real person when placing an order, a Conroy’s employee returns every phone call and because it’s a small company, Conroy’s typically can deliver propane and heating fuel within a couple of days from when a phone order is placed.

“The key to our business being successful are the people within our organization,” Heanssler said. “We have a great group of team members and because we’re happy, we go out of our way to make sure every one of our customers are satisfied. We believe it’s the attention to details that matter.”

Even though Conroy’s offers traditional heating oil and kerosene, the company is excited to now provide propane to customers.

“Propane is considered a green energy as compared to other energy sources, and also burns with greater efficiency,” Heanssler said. “Propane is known for its versatility and not only is it used for primary heating; but is also used for cooking, fireplaces, and pool heating. To establish a new service or to switch from another provider please call today and a service provider will discuss your needs and the installation process.”

With outstanding customer service, a quick turnaround for deliveries and handy pricing options, Conroy’s Home Heating Fuels hopes to make many new friends and loyal customers in Windham this heating season.

Business Spotlight: Vet At Your Door

Veterinary medicine is evolving, and part of that change is available right here in Windham as Vet At Your Door offers an elevated veterinarian experience by caring for your pets in the comfort of home while saving pet owners the hassle of transporting anxious pets to the vet.

Deirdre Frey, the owner of Vet At Your Door, says that Dr. Deanna Anderson serves Windham and having her visit clients' homes lends itself to providing a more connecting and devoted veterinary experience.

“We are a house-call veterinary practice dedicated to providing an exceptional veterinary experience in the comfort of home,” Frey said. “We offer wellness services such as exams, vaccines, screening lab work, along with sick visits, hospice care, acupuncture and euthanasia, all in the low-stress, comfortable environment of home. We are also grateful to have wonderful veterinarians offering extended emergency euthanasia hours beyond our regular office hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Extended euthanasia hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.”

According to Frey, the best part of the mobile veterinarian practice is meeting and interacting with the people they serve.

“Coming to their homes, we get to connect with people in a different way,” she said. “Moreover, at home your pet, you, and your veterinarian are much more relaxed, and we really have the time and the relationship to develop the best plan with you regarding your pet's health and situation,” Frey said. “Importantly, we love and are grateful to be practicing this way. I have tried really hard to make our staff's work/life balance actually work, so they are available to you, emotionally, mentally, and physically, when they enter your home. Additionally, we have what we call our ‘One Team Approach’ that matches not only a veterinarian to you specifically, but also a veterinary technician and a client liaison. This way, you have entire veterinary team, from the person on the phone to the person in your home, that you will get to know and love as the years progress.”

Vet At Your Door has been in business since 2015 and has been serving Windham for the past four years.

“We hire doctors who live in and love the areas we serve. Dr. Deanna Anderson is the veterinarian who serves Windham and has chosen to live here and raise her family here and get to know the community, both two-legged and four-legged, through her work,” Frey said. “Also, having the veterinarian come to your home makes things so much less stressful for all involved and truly lends itself to an easy, low-stress, high-quality veterinary experience that our clients and their pets love.”

Your Door mobile veterinary
service serves Windham.

Anderson received her DVM from Iowa State University in 2016 and has been a part of the Windham team since February after having been in general practice for several years.

“Jacquie Prather is her veterinary nurse and is absolutely wonderful,” Frey said. “And Amy Phillips is the team's client liaison, at the ready to answer the phone and is a ninja at her keyboard. Overall, we have 21 employees that serve in veterinary teams throughout Maine.”

Exceptional customer service and convenience are the core of the Vet At Your Door business.

“We focus on making sure our clients feel heard and listened to,” Frey said. “I sincerely believe that from the first phone call to helping a beloved pet pass peacefully in the comfort of home, our quality, sincerity, and customer service cannot be beat. We constantly receive wonderful feedback about our incredible staff, the high-quality of the veterinary advice we provide, and the devoted customer service we are so very passionate about.”

Pricing for services is comparable to regular veterinary practices. The main difference is the addition of the trip fee of $86 to bring the veterinary team to you. Frey said Vet At Your Door clients attest there is excellent value for the money in the services they provide.

“We are always ensuring that we are staying up to date on new medications and therapies as they come out, and love doing continuing education to keep ourselves educated on the best and most novel therapies. Business-wise, there are very few house call practices in the U.S. with so many employees that cover such a large service area, so we are building the plane while it is flying so to speak. But our amazing, nimble, and experienced team makes it a joy to chart a course forward, constantly making ourselves better and better.”

Business Spotlight: Mainely Ticks

By Barb Maurais
Educational Resources, Mainely Ticks

Deer ticks didn’t leave the state over Labor Day weekend.

Summer months in Maine are peak for Lyme disease – a result of our extended outdoor activities in proximity to the tiny nymphal deer tick. But as we enter the fall season, please be aware that larval ticks and adult deer ticks will become most active.

Larval ticks are out now…

Encounters with larval ticks can be messy – people often describe these larval ticks as having stepped directly into a “tick nest.” Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts – take note! This is a fair description since these egg masses can contain 1,500 or more newly hatched ticks that are seeking their first blood meal. Don’t let it be from you! Given that you’ll encounter multiple larval ticks, it’s important to know how to protect yourself. Because larval ticks are so small (about the size of the period at the end of the sentence) that they can crawl right through socks, consider wearing clothing treated with 0.5 percent permethrin to stop them in their tracks. You can purchase treated socks, plants, shirts, and other garments online, at local sporting stores (Dicks, LL Bean, Dog Not Gone), treat your own clothing at home, or send clothing to Insect Shield www.insectshield.com to be treated professionally. (15 percent savings with MainelyTicks coupon code.) You can also tackle a swarm of larval ticks before they attach on your clothing or skin by using the sticky side of duct tape – that along with patience and a keen eye will remove large numbers of ticks. Thorough tick checks to find tiny ticks that have escaped the duct tape along with a pair of fine pointed tweezers to remove any attached ticks are both essential steps to reduce your tick encounters.

Coming soon…

While it seems as though they just left, adult blacklegged ticks will be returning near the end of September and continuing throughout the fall and into the winter…whenever the temperature is above freezing, deer ticks may be active. Adult female activity peaks in the fall. Be aware that dense leaf litter is prime tick habitat. Wear protective clothing, apply repellent to exposed skin, and do frequent tick checks when outdoors this fall.

Tick vectors…

Small rodents, not deer, are responsible for transmitting the Lyme disease bacteria to ticks. A typical field mouse can carry more than 100 ticks during peak activity periods, and all of those ticks have the potential of transmitting Lyme disease. Mouse and chipmunk activity on your property may support the presence of deer ticks.

Tick habitat and landscape modifications…

Ticks need moist areas to survive. Modifying your landscape is a simple way to reduce tick populations. Clean up your yard and keep grass short. Trim branches to let the sunshine in. Sunny areas are less likely to harbor ticks. Remove leaf litter and brush from your property and the perimeter. Move bird feeders and wood piles away from your home. Consider a run or invisible fence to keep pets out of the woods as the fall months are peak for canine Lyme.

Tick check…

The longer a deer tick is attached, the greater the chances of contracting Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. Develop a routine of checking yourself, your children, and your pets frequently after outdoor activity. When showering or bathing, do a full body inspection for a rash or attached ticks. Also use the sensitivity of your fingertips to feel for attached ticks. Pay special attention to favorite tick spots, including the back of the knees, groin, waist, armpits, and scalp.

Tick educational partnership …

Mainely Ticks recently partnered with University of Rhode Island’s TickEncounter TickSPOTTERS where you will learn tick removal tips, tick identification with photo submission, and personalized risk assessment based on your specific tick photo submissions. Business Spotlight: Fringe - Salon with Benefits

Fringe Salon in Windham is on a mission of helping people feel good about themselves and treating everyone they meet as if they are longtime best friends.

Now open at 8 Turning Leaf Drive at The Shops at Sebago, Fringe bills itself as the “Salon with Benefits,” a slogan that makes owner, stylist, and lash artist Natalee Taylor laugh.

“We love what we do and have fun doing it,” Taylor said. “The slogan fits us perfectly and every time we think of it, it makes us all smile.”

Fringe opened July 6 in a clean and comfortable setting when three stylist friends from the old Roots Salon in Windham had to relocate and decided to open a new facility that focuses on putting people first. Although Fringe is a new salon, the stylist team there has been working together for six years at Roots and they complement each other well, bringing different skill sets and areas of expertise to the business.

“We offer our clients a judgement-free and friendly environment in which you leave feeling and looking better than when you walked in,” Taylor said. “We often have clients tell us that they wish they could just hang out with us all day because of the fun we have while working. Our staff has been complimented on the genuine love and respect we have for one another, often by other stylists. We like to make everyone who walks in our door feel like someone. Many of our clients become our friends because of the bonds we build. It’s never just about the hair, it’s about the whole person.”

Fringe Salon offers all hair services, lash extensions, Microblading and facial waxing and its staff has a combined 72 years of experience in the industry.

“We are independently priced, but we are competitive in our area,” Taylor said. “We have clients that travel from Massachusetts, North Conway, New Hampshire, DownEast, Southern Maine and right here in Windham.”

Customers love how they are treated and the quality of the work and products at Fringe.

Stylists of Fringe include Corbi Duquette,
Natalee Taylor and Shelley Worthing. They
take pride in providing professional hair
care and more in an upbeat atmosphere.

“I have never had an experience like I had with Natalee this evening... She was absolutely phenomenal! She really took her time to make sure every hair fell in the right place, made me feel comfortable and was very professional while still making me laugh and have a blast....!!! Will definitely be going back for more from Natalee and recommending her to everyone I know!!” Sarah Spiller

“Thank you Corbi! Excellent job and awesome service. It feels really amazing to finally have a hairdresser at home in Maine. Thank you for your warm hospitality and Omar cuddles.” Kelly Smith

“Although I have known Shelley for about 15 years, this is my first experience with microblading. My brows were in sad shape after cancer treatment. I have a little piece of myself back and my brows look great now!” Alissa Noble

“My friend recommended Natalee when I needed someone to do my makeup for an event and it was sort of last minute. She took me in and has done my makeup twice already! She is so personable, and she is very talented, I would highly recommend her! She will be there doing makeup for my wedding day! You won’t be disappointed!” - Susan Pooler

“The name, Fringe, a salon with benefits, is exactly that! The location and space is very welcoming, bright and comfortable. The stylists there have many years of experience and ensure you feel pampered and beautiful when you walk out! They give their client the time and undivided attention to give the look you want. I highly recommend booking an appointment with them. From the warm welcome you get from the time you walk in, to feeling your best self when you walk out, the experience at Fringe is one you’ll keep going back for!” Heather Rose

Taylor says that exceptional customers service and having fun are the cornerstones of Fringe and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The most important thing to remember about us is that we are people too, we love to laugh and have a good time,” she said. “We love to give our clients our all every day. We offer wine, coffee, and water, a warm welcome when you walk in and the very best and the latest and greatest techniques and products to achieve a custom look for our clients. We truly love what we do and love and appreciate our clients.”

Taylor does plan to add to the staff soon but will be selective to find just the right fit.

“We are always seeking out additional education and new trends to keep us up to date,” she said. “We often learn from each other. We are flexible and accommodating with our time. We try to find the right fit for every client and believe in giving back to the community. We’re good at what we do, are friendly and kind and we have a lot of fun here.”
