The veterinary facility opened in 2023 at into  158 Roosevelt Trail in Windham and now offers expanded services to include a weekend veterinary urgent care clinic along with dentistry services for cats and dogs. Its dedicated team aims to provide prompt, caring, and skillful medical attention, allowing for personalized treatment of pets in the Lakes Region.

At Mainely Veterinary Dentistry & Urgent Care, state-of-the-art veterinary equipment is used to treat urgent care conditions that may affect area pets.

“We are thrilled to offer urgent care services to help people and their cats, dogs and other pets when available. With our equipment and technology that we use to help pets with their oral health, we know we can be a valuable place for people to come when they have an urgent issue that we can address and save them time and money from traveling far distances. The community we’ve built at MVD is where teamwork, kindness, advocacy, and education are at the center of everything we do,” said Dr. Jennifer Keaten, the owner of Mainely Veterinary Dentistry & Urgent Care.

She said that the company has seen a significant amount of interest in urgent care services through phone calls, emails and website visits to inquire about pets who have urgent health conditions.

“These are for simple things such as ear infections that can’t wait but they can’t get in at other clinics,” Keaten said. “It mixes well with our dental practice. and we’ve hired veterinarians to be on staff on weekends for support and making us much more knowledgeable on weekends.”

By adding urgent care services covering from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, Mainely Veterinary Dentistry & Urgent Care is now a closer option for many residents instead of driving into Portland as well as being an urgent care that knows about veterinary dentistry needs if that is what a pet requires.

“There is lots of information on our website, but we treat non-threatening but serious things such as urinary issues, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, toxin ingestion, eye problems, ear infections, torn nails, laceration repair, quill removal, allergic reaction, not eating, weight loss, limping, and back or neck pain.”

The fear-free approach offered by MVD helps to keep pets comfortable during their time spent with veterinarians.

“We do not rush through appointments and give the pet the time and space they need and give them treats when we can to give them a positive experience.” Keaten said. “We do most of our exams on cats in our cat bed in the window so they can look outside at the bird feeder and other things. We even have a virtual waiting room so that you can see how long it will be before we can see you and so you don’t have to wait in the parking lot for the appointment, you can come in when we are ready for you.”

Keaten says Mainely Veterinary Dentistry & Urgent Care is excited to offer this new urgent care service to help pets in the community.

“We are especially excited about the opportunity for people to get appropriate dentistry care on the weekend,” she said. “That does not mean we will be doing full dentistry procedures on the weekend, but our urgent care team will be informed on how to keep them stable and what medications to prescribe to keep them comfortable for a dentistry procedure.”

As a veterinarian since 2013 and before that a technician at Fryeburg Veterinary Hospital for four years, Keaten has loved veterinary dentistry and preventive medicine since she was a technician and developed a drive for urgent care while working as a veterinarian at Norway Veterinary Hospital and Petmedic in Portland. She started the business with three employees and her, and she now has a staff of 22 people working there.

According to Keaten, MVD is a privately owned and woman-owned veterinary practice and she is enthusiastic to offer weekend urgent care services to help local pets and their owners.
